Cyber attacks

The number of cyberattacks increased sharply in Switzerland in 2021. In the first half of 2021, 10,234 cases of cybercrime were reported to the National Cyber Security Center (NCSC), twice as many as in the first half of the year before. This also has to do with the Corona pandemic, as working from a home office provides criminals with new attack opportunities.

While larger companies generally have the necessary resources and skills to deal with cyber risks, small and medium-sized companies are often more vulnerable to these risks. More and more Swiss companies are therefore turning to IT security service providers to keep their security-related IT infrastructure up to date, prevent data loss and ward off cyber threats. There are various models for companies to successfully outsource IT security.

Security as a Service

Increasingly popular is the security as a service model, in which security services are provided by a service provider in the cloud and on a subscription basis. This offers companies many advantages over in-house operation, such as reduced operating costs, the elimination of high investment costs for hardware and software, flexible adaptation of the services as required, and rapid commissioning of the service solutions.

The policy of the security services can be managed by the companies themselves. Companies also have the option of outsourcing their IT security to a Managed Security Service Provider (MSSP). An MSSP is a service provider that manages its customer’s IT infrastructure either partially or in its entirety. Here, too, companies have many advantages over in-house operation.

A Managed Security Services is usually modular in structure and can be flexibly tailored and adapted to the customer’s requirements. Billing is either at a fixed price or on a monthly basis according to expenditure, while high initial investment costs are eliminated. By outsourcing IT security to a managed security service provider, companies can concentrate fully on their core business.

Managed security service providers also offer their customers cloud-based security as a service solutions. Rheintec, as an MSSP in the Swiss market, offers its customers Zscaler, for example, a cloud security platform that protects companies from cyber attacks and data loss by securely connecting users, devices and applications from any location over any network.
